Dmitrik showed that he is up for just about any challenge. Jumping alone at a world record 2.41m height, and after two mediocre attempts, the St. Petersburger came oh so close to breaking Javier Sotomayor's 2.40 standard which has stood for almost 23 years. A great ending to an exciting evening which saw an extraordinarily deep competition field.

The three podium claimants became known at 2.33m, as Silnov and Oni departed, the latter only after an excellent third attempt. Baba and Ukhov passed 2.33, leaving Dmitrik to move solidly to the front with a second-jump success. Next height: 2.35m.

Six jumpers emerged from 2.28m to move on to 2.31m. Five cleared 2.28m, with Ukhov advancing through a pass. Horak brought the biggest noise of the night with a first-jump clearance, which was matched by Oni on the very next attempt. Baba and Dmitrik also were perfect at this height with the Russian having the only blemish-free card of the competition at this point. Silnov sneaked through on a third-attempt success after two less-than-stellar jumps which failed. Moving to the sideline here were Moffatt, Baniotis, Barry, and Hondrokoukis.

Jumping at 2.20m eliminated no competitors. Keith Moffatt went to the limit and cleared on his second (and final) attempt, while the other nine saw their initial jumps bring success. Onward to 2.24m, still with ten jumpers in contention.

Darwin Edwards of St. Lucia was the only casualty at the opening 2.10m height. A bit of comic flair came from Russia's Ivan Ukhov, who attempted (unsuccessfully) to 'scissor' the opening height. Never without a sense of humor, Ukhov was laughing perhaps harder than anyone else in the hall as he exited the pit. He then passed his remaining attempts at 2.10m. Next height is 2.15m.

The jump by Shkolina held up as the winner, as the others could not achieve 1.95m. Next height for the Russian will be 2.00m, which would equal her indoor personal best.

All four jumpers negotiated 1.93m but with varying degrees of success. Howard-Lowe, Gordeyeva, and Shkolina kept their day's records clean with first-jump successes, while Kuchina stayed alive only by virtue of a determined third-attempt clearance. Next up: 1.95m.

First-jump successes were recorded at 1.87m by Petre, Howard-Lowe, Gordyeva (the most space of any jump), and Shkolina. Aitova and Kuchina needed two, while Maresova brought the Czech crowd out of their seats as she stayed alive with a third-jump clearance. Like Friedrich, Simic retired at this height with three misses. Seven remain alive as the bar goes to 1.90m

Irina Gordeyeva and Svetlana Shkolina, both of Russia, opened their day at 1.84m with first-jump clearances, as Simic, Maresova, Aitova, Howard-Lowe and Kuchina likewise needed only one try. Petre recovered from a first-try miss with success on her second, while Ogrodnik found the height out of reach and departed.

As jumping at 1.80m winds down, Patterson and Forrester drop out with three misses. Esthera Petre of Romania recovers after an opening miss to find success on her second attempt, while Maresova, Kuchina, Marina Aitova of Kazakhstan, and American Chaunte Howard Lowe score first-attempt clearances. The next height is 1.84m.

Long-time indoor circuit participant Nicole Forrester of Canada, Oldriska Maresova of the host Czech Republic, and Mariya Kuchina of Russia all easily cleared the opening height. Ogrodnik followed suit on her second jump, as the field goes to 1.80 with no casualties.

Magdalena Ogrodnik of Poland starts the competition with a miss at the opening 1.75m height.

The cozy City Sports Hall in the south Moravian city of Hustopece is filled to capacity on this sunny, cold afternoon. The competition is almost ready to begin as the women jumpers are introduced.
